A water-repellent jacket is designed to repel water and protect against light showers. Unlike a classic jacket, it benefits from a specific treatment that allows water to slide off the fabric without penetrating the material. To maintain its technical properties, appropriate care is essential.
A water-repellent fabric is surface-treated to prevent water from seeping in. Drops bead up and roll off the fabric. However, please note: water-repellent does not mean waterproof. The protection is effective against light rain or splashes, but not against heavy, prolonged rain.
How to wash a water-repellent jacket?
As we state in the preamble to our coat care guide, simply following a label is not always enough to clean your item correctly. Improper washing can alter the technical treatment of our items.
To help you, here are some best practices:
- Always refer to the care labels which detail the washing possibilities.
-
Clean your jacket at least once a year, at the end of the season, before storing it.
-
If the item allows, choose a delicate or hand wash program, use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener (which destroys the water-repellent treatment).
Always close zippers and turn the jacket inside out before washing.
How to reactivate or reinforce water repellency?
Over time, the treatment can fade. It is possible to use:
-
A re-waterproofing spray: Use a textile waterproofing spray. This operation should be repeated regularly as this treatment is volatile and fades over time, washes and showers!
-
A specific treatment to apply after washing
